im a climber and need to know the drop in temperature with altitude gained. If its 2 degrees Centigrade in the valley how high in metres do i need to go till i reach freezing ?

The temperature drops approximately 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit per 1000 feet.

This is only true in the troposphere, which is 36,000 feet and below. Though as a hiker, you wont have to worry about that.

Though keep in mind, it is not very accurate for hikers, since hills provide trees, shade, streams, etc, which can all effect the temperature.
