You can convert unknown units by converting their basic parts.

1 pound = 453.59237 gram
1 square foot = 929.0304 square centimeter

pound/square foot * (453.59237/929.0304) = gram/square centimeter
pound/square foot * 0.488243 = gram/square centimeter

In your case:
40 * 0.488243 = 19.5297
